Blasting is the first stage of nearly every log restoration we do, and it is the stage that decides how well the new finish holds. We use forty-seventy fine glass on a pot blaster. It lifts failed stain and the dead grey surface layer off the wood without burning it and without leaving the swirl marks a sander does. Just as important, it leaves the grain raised and open, which is the only state a penetrating stain will actually soak into rather than sit on top of. The site gets contained first: windows, glass, roofing, plantings and the ground. Crews work in respirators. Where blasting is wrong, close to open water or on logs too soft to take it, we chemically strip instead, and which one you are getting is written into the scope before anyone starts. Cedar siding is a different job from a log wall. The boards are thin and the grain tears if the pressure is wrong, which is why a cedar home at Seven Bays with a failed water seal was taken back more gently than a pine wall would be.

Reviews

Take a look at what your neighbors are saying about us.
  • We’ve worked with Mike and the crew at Chewelah Painting quite a bit over the years, and they’re a solid outfit. They know their trade, show up, work hard, and take pride in what they put their name on. Being in the trades and seeing so many others, we know good work when we see it, and these guys do good work. Mike is pretty particular about the finished product, and he doesn’t call it done until it’s done right. That says a lot in this industry. We’ve always had a good experience working alongside Chewelah Painting and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them.
